Great Balls of fire! PDF Print E-mail
Can you give us an introduction to the history of ballooning?
It started in France. A couple of brothers named Montgolfier noticed that smoke from a fire created lift and built what they called a smoke balloon. They launched it in November 1783. The first modern hot air balloon flight was done bye Ed Yost in1962 for the US Navy.

Have you had many bumpy landings?
Oh, a few. It’s the best part of the whole ride. If you ask people what they’ll say the landings are crashes, but some are better than others. Also, take offs are optional – landings are guaranteed!

Has anybody gone round the world?

Air Ballon in Costa Rica
Two Swiss guys. It looks those 18 days. They said the highlight of their trip was when they were able to descend to 12.000 feet and get some fresh air. They were in a pressurized cabin and they flew at 30.000 feet in a stream. That just happened a couple of years ago. They spent 5 million bucks to win a prize of $500.000.

What did they do when they needed to pee?
They must have had a honey pot…,ja!

What’s the fasted you’ve flown?
Probably about 85 miles an hour (137 Kph).

So what do you do if it all starts to go horribly wrong?
You put your head firmly between your butt goodbyes. No, I’m just kidding. I’ve had and onboard fire once, which I put out with the fire extinguisher and we managed to get down to the ground in one piece. I’ve also come close to hitting power lines twice blue other than it’s been pretty safe.

Can you do any cool maneuvers?
No. We fly totally with the wind.

What are the stranger things that people have done in hot air balloons? I’ve heard of bungee jumping…

I’ve done it! They say it’s like having a car wreck and a climax at the same time. Bungee jumping was fun actually. The most I’ve had as a balloon pilot. A lot of times I tell them “OK you can go ahead and jump out now” and they look at me like? Are you talking to me??’ I had a group of biker dudes once and they talked so tough on the ground but when we got up in the air they were scared to death. I’ve also married (a friend’s) brother and his wife on my balloon.
