The South Pacific Area, Ballena Coast where Dominicalito is located, has an enviable geographic position. Costa Rica is well known as worldwide Sport Fishing spot for the big concentration of Sail Fish in its waters during the dry season from December to end of May. The reason of the unusual quantity of Sail Fishes is the annual migration of them from deep waters to coastal waters looking for small fishes from the south of the country to the north area.
Together with Sail Fishes, there are big schools of Mahi Mahi, Blue and Black Marlins, huge Yellow Fin Tunas and Wahoos all year around. Then, all there species make Costa Rica a Sport Fishing paradise. The way of the migration of Sail Fish gives us the access to the best fish banks during the first month of the year for the Southern Pacific zone of Costa Rica. From our place in Dominicalito to reach Caño Island and Furuno Bank it takes us only 1 and 1/2 hours.
Where to fish?
The Furuno Bank is located 23 nautical miles from Dominical and the Caño Island is about 30 nautical miles. This strategic position is the main advantage in comparison with the main fishing destinations. Therefore, we are the first to reach the lonely Furuno Bank and move south to the banks close to Caño Island, thanks to the geography position then we are able to fish in almost virgin areas all day long.
For every fishermen the advantages mention before are very important to be consider in order to achieve their expectations.
What to fish?
The most common species depending on the season are:
Blue Marlin and Black Marlin, Pez Vela, Wahoo, Dorado or Mahimah, Gallo or Roosterfish, Atun Aleta Amarilla, Jurel or Jack, Macarela, Róbalo (snook), Pargos(snapper), Groupers or meros, Barracuda.
The Sport Fishing season in the South Pacific is all year around. Our Sport Fishing is catch and release but there are some species that died after being release. That is the reason why our captains make ceviche and sashimi but also our restaurant can cook the fish as well.
Where can one stay?
Our services try to be customized to the taste of our clients... We have drinks and gourmet sandwiches, transport and fits of the schedules. Without being our specialty we are have sometimes the opportunity to observe whales and dolphins in the area.
